In a time of imperial majesty, of feudal rule in the far north, Abubakar, the son of Gumi, the son of Suleiman seeks to travel the world, haven seen the world through the eyes and stories of transatlantic Arab and local traders who travel the lands, Abubakar thus choose to see these splendors of the distant lands these sojourners speak of.
Born into a legacy family of Ironsmiths in the land of Tudun-Wada who make the royal and war devices for the kingdom, Abubakar’s family is well close to the throne of Tudun-Wada, having been favored by the Emir.
Abubakar’s family is wealthy but he seeks nor wealth nor power, instead Abubakar seeks knowledge, a knowledge that can only come from traveling into distant lands, a thirst his father kicks against, Suleiman, Abubaka’s father wants his son to continue in the family business which has brought them wealth, fame and power.
In the midst of these, Abubaka’s grandfather wants his grandson’s wish to come to pass so he brings Abubakar before the Emir, telling the Emir of Abubaka’s dream, the king offers to help by handing over Abubakar to his personal friend and traveler of land, Hassan.
Hassan is a man who has seen many realms and kingdoms either in their glory or in their ruins, he tell tales of kingdom beyond the ocean where he has travelled to, thus flaming the embers of Abubakar’s young mind.
Ultimately Abubakar is handed over to Hassan and the journey begins but it wouldn’t be the kind of journey that Abubakar as dreamt of all his young life.
Hassan is a mysterious old man who has seen many things in his journey of life and is also impatient to master anyone in the art of living the life on the road but even with this, Abubakar knows there is more to the quiet old man than meets the eye so Abubakar becomes naturally inquisitive of the old man’s ways and actions.
Their first port of call is the ancient town of Woji, a town that Abubakar himself has heard so many great things about from travelers who frequent his kingdom but instead of Hassan to take Abubakar on a tour of the land, he is handed over to Jubril, an acolyte and friend of Hassan while Hassan disappears frequently and conveniently but not for long.
Abubakar soon finds out that he and Hassan belong to a group of faithful and committed few who are in the business of rescuing people captured to be sold into slavery by the Seriki of Woji, a one-time farming community that is now overrun with slave hunters and buyers which is chiefly now the Seriki’s business of choice.
Abubakar is even more in awe of Hassan and his friend Hassan who have committed their lives to the service of humanity by making sure nobody stays a slave, secretly, the people captured as slaves are rescued and Abubakar and his mentor Hassan with Jubril make their way out of Woji, having concluded their act of service.
But they are far from rejoicing when upon nearing the fabled town of Zuba, Hassan gets word that his only child, Aisha has been captured by slave hunters to the Emir and she is being kept alongside other captured people, waiting to be sold to slave buyers.
Hassan and the Emir has a distasteful past so when Hassan meets with the Emir for the release of Aisha he is met by a ruler who is more than happy to turn down Hassan’s request stating Aisha must be sold to slavery.
Hassan, with the help of Jubril lays a siege over the palace one night but he is overpowered and many of his acolytes killed, Hassan would later become a prisoner in the palace of the Emir alongside the daughter he was trying to save.
Abubakar decides to stay in Zuba to see what he can do about his master’s fate so he seeks out work with an ironsmith named Ali-Mahmoud.
