SYNOPSIS:
Kabir Suleiman, a sojourner and seeker of a better life finds solace in the tanning town of the norther caliphate of Funtua. His journey before then was not a smooth one, having left his village in search of greener pastures and a will to see the world, Kabir did not meet with much goodwill.
But on the day he was to be lynched to death for stealing a bunch of banana, fate brings him to Hassan, a popular tanner in Futua who rescues him from the mob, pays for the banana and offers him a lifetime opportunity to change his lot.
Hassan offers him a job and accommodation in his local tanning shop and here, Kabir finds himself a good opportunity to make his lot a lot much better, Funtua will not be his final stop but it will be a place to put his plans together.
Kabir seeks out a female fortune teller who tells him that all the honor and wealth he seeks is close by but there will be several tragedies in his way of achieving his destiny.
Enters Amina, Hassan’s beautiful daughter who serves food to the workers at the tannery but Amina didn’t quite catch Kabir’s eyes like the younger sister, Tenau. He does not hide his likeness and attraction for Tenau and would seek out opportunities to see or speak with her which is against the tradition of the land because a man should not be seen standing with a woman who is not her husband or family.
Tenau is the fairest of them all, elegant in her ways but both Amina and Tenau are spoken for, betrothed to men of war, warriors who have gone on a slave raid for the Emir of Funtua.
Calamity strikes when the warring men comes back and Amina’s betrothed, Ahmed didn’t make it back alive, her man died in war and per tradition, Ahmed’s family are given the first right of refusal to marry Amina into their family, then Abubakar, Ahmed’s brother steps up to take her late brother’s place by marrying Amina.
Amina is not happy about this, coupled with the fact that she has been married before, her late husband died when he was attacked by a wild animal in the farm, now another man has died on her matter, she considers herself cursed but she has to marry Abubakar as tradition demands.
Kabir and Amina has formed a sort of a friendship by now and Kabir, an empath knows Amina will not be happy in the marriage she is going into but he couldn’t help it, what is done is done.
But fate has its way of aligning destinies when Hassan’s house goes up in flames one night and Kabir singlehandedly rescued eight of Hassan’s children and Hassan himself while sustaining some injuries. The Emir summons Hassan and Kabir and asks Hassan to reward Kabir for his bravery, when asked what Kabir wanted, he asked for Amina’s hand in marriage.
Amina is surprised but Kabir’s defense is that he knew Amina would not be happy marrying Abubakar, Amina is surprised that anyone would make this kind of surprise for her and easily accepts Kabir’s hand in marriage, Kabir is heavily compensated by Hassan and the Emir for his bravery in saving Hassan and his household.
Again, fate has a very different plan for Tenau, Amina’s sister, her husband is abusive and in one of her husband’s molesting rage, she lost a pregnancy, this irks Hassan and Tenau’s brothers and forces a divorce of Tenau from her husband according to the Islamic process.
Tenau, now back in her father’s house now has to make a choice of a new suitor and she declares to everyone that she would want to be married off to Kabir, Amina’s husband.
This comes as a shock to everyone but not to Amina, Tenau’s older half-sister who had already connived with Tenau to make the declaration. To Amina, since she has been unlucky to have a child, her half-sister would make a fine wife to her husband and will ensure peace for them both, especially since it was Tenau that Kabir was interested in from the beginning.
Tenau is also married off to Kabir but their joy was short-lived when Tenau gave birth and the baby dies three days after due to a broken limb at birth, at that same time Amina’s mother died and Kabir has to divide his attention between Tenau who just lost a child and Amina who has lost her senses due to the death of her mother.
Kabir has his hands full but not in a good way and due to Amina’s loss of her senses, Kabir pays more attention to her which fuels Tenau’s anger for her sister and also breeds jealousy, now Tenau is all out to have Amina out of her life once and for all, after all, Kabir was supposed to be her husband in the first place, now she is setting out to claim what ought to have rightfully been hers.
Tenau kickstart a move to have Amina killed and taken out of the picture but will she succeed? Kabir is aware that there’s fire in his home but would he be smart enough to finger Tenau as the culprit behind the many calamities the family is going through?
